While in New York City earlier this month I had the opportunity to sit in on a lecture put on by our partners, New York Digital, in NYC. The speakers, Mariana Figueiro, Ph.D., Director Lighting Research Center at RPI and Mark Rea, Ph.D., Director, Lighting Research Center at RPI did a great job of presenting the data behind claims about the impact of light on the human body. With LumaFilm’s form factor of thin, flexible and minimal heat, we are able to provide solutions using our tunable (color temperature changing) and RGBW (Red, Green, Blue, White) products.

4 Benefits of Minimizing Circadian Rhythm Disruptions

Test results indicate the most efficient means to deliver impactful light that minimizes circadian rhythm disruptions is through vertical surfaces. This measurement is called the Circadian Stimuli or the CS metric. Through utilizing our flexible LED sheets, designers can use our tunable and RGBW LumaFilm options to apply light on any vertical surface, including walls and cubicles. We have all heard about the mental health benefits including reduced stress, anxiety and depression, but there are additional benefits:

  1. Cardiovascular disorders: The research presented indicates that when the circadian rhythm continues to get disrupted, there is a 40% increased risk for Angina pectoris, hypertension, and myocardial infarction.

  2. Increased cancer risks: Not getting the right amount of the right type of light can increase one’s risk of breast cancer and colorectal cancer.

  3. Gastrointestinal disorders: Dyspepsia, heartburn, abdominal pains and flatulence show improvement with the right amount of impactful CS lighting.

  4. Brain effects: Disruptions to an individual’s circadian rhythm has a significant impact on the brain’s ability to function and to sleep. This impact includes reduction in brain volume, sleep loss, REM sleep reduction, Stage 2 sleep reduction and fatigue.

The LumaFilm Solution can help Designers with Circadian Health

Designers are being asked to think about “layers of light” when working on projects that require strict energy restrictions. LumaFilm’s RGBW product allows designers and Specifiers the ability to use saturated blue to boost CS then, in the same space use red light later in the day to create an acute alerting effect without suppressing melatonin. LumaFilm allows designers to use blue light in the morning and red light in the afternoon as a way to boost alertness of occupants.

Let LumaFilm lend you our century of collective experience for your next lighting project. We can make your areas stand out. Our products are thin, energy efficient, and allow for an unlimited range of high definition design.
